Gang Awareness and Solutions Series
It wasn't too long ago that gum chewing, paper-wad fights and occasional shoving matches were the kinds of problems that teachers and school principals had to deal with.
But times have changed.
Teachers and administrators still have to handle the old-fashioned kid stuff, but they - and parents - also worry now about violent male and female gang activity on and off the school campus, serious fights, armed students, stabbings and even shootings resulting in student or teacher deaths.
The safe and serene mood, at an ever-growing number of elementary, junior high and middle, and high school campuses, has been disrupted by the on-site need for trained security resource officers or police officers, metal detectors, bomb drills, personal student searches and even locker searches by drug and bomb-sniffing dog teams, all as proactive steps toward maintaining some degree of tighter campus security.
Specialized counseling services have been made available to help students get along with one another, to eliminate and survive bullying situations, to stay safe and out of gangs.
As an additional effort, schools are trying harder to get parents involved in their childrens' lives and their schooling.
According to the average outcry of a number of dedicated educators, "We try everything. But we're teachers! We can't be parents to our students, too!" And that's exactly correct ... and every teacher knows it. So does every school counselor, every principal, every school security resource officer and, of course every police officer and agency who responds to on-campus crime incidents.
While parents are the key to reaching and shaping the lives of children, for the single mom with a headstrong, 15-year-old boy or girl on her hands, that can be a tall order - especially if she has waited until her child has reached 15-years-old to start trying.
Even having two parents around is no guarantee that young people, who are commonly the victims of bullies, gangs and intimidation, won't take a knife to school for protection. It is also no guarantee that a young, impressionable female, who has aligned herself with gangs and gang involvement, and who may be required to have sexual relations with each gang member to maintain self-esteem and her chattel status, won't get pregnant.
For teachers, school counselors, child study teams, support personnel, school security resource officers, principals, school board members, education commissioners and superintendents, police officers, juvenile correctional professionals, members of the community, parents and even young people themselves, seeking to understand the culture, the lure and the nature of gangs, through awareness, training, intervention and prevention, a truly unique and vital audiocassette, book and video series is now available to help in your proactive response to the threat, the violence and the intimidation that gangs create and maintain:

About The 3-Volume Audiocassette Series:
"GANGSTA IN THE HOUSE", is a collection of observations and conclusions made by a former fifteen-year veteran police officer from Houston, Texas, who helped to create his agency's Command Divisional Gang Unit and later became a member of the Texas Juvenile Justice Task Force.
Tape volume #1 begins with its Prologue, which is a graphic fictional account of a drive-by shooting and is based on a compilation of real life incidents. It has two themes. One: Gang members are seeking firm, fair, and consistent external discipline to help them decide where social boundaries are located, and Two: Promises kept breed respect for the system while promises broken breed contempt. was purposely created with a conversational style, including a touch of humor. The subject is, however, very serious and relevant to today's social environment. Listening to the audio book should take the mystery out of the gang experience and open doors to understanding why these young people do the things they do. An explanation about how gang members perceive the world differently than "normal" people and how that different perception occurs is offered.
The listener learns about the Three Big Lies told by all street gangs to their members and how those lies help in recruiting new members and bolstering the image of the gang. The listener discovers that most criminal street gangs fall into one of the five "families" of gangs and how he or she can learn to recognize these broad families. Girl Gangs, the nature of the gang uniform, and the purpose of graffiti is discussed in detail.
The last three chapters: Empowerment, Denial and The Cure formulate conclusions and detail specific suggestions for change in the way we deal with crime and punishment issues. The listener may be surprised by the nature and scope of these changes--particularly coming from a person of the author's background.
GANGSTA IN THE HOUSE offers practical, common sense solutions for parents, communities, and governments that could Affect gangs and crime in America and make our neighborhoods safer for all of us and the littlest targets of gang involvement, our children.
An excerpt from GANGSTA IN THE HOUSE reveals:
"The biggest obstacle faced by any person, community, or government agency is denial. All the problems created in the community by youths who become attracted to gangs are simple to resolve compared with the problem of denial. Gang experts nationwide repeat the same message to law enforcement officials in almost every seminar or class given for police officers who must deal with gangs: Quit denying the existence of gangs and accept their presence in the community. Only when denial ceases can action be taken and resources dedicated to deal with the real problems created by gangs. For some reason, despite all the expert advice, none of us want to admit that our city, school, or child is involved with gangs. Denial of the gang problem by any community or person increases the potential of further gang activity and also increases the probability that the gang problem will grow. Without a parent's denial, a child cannot dress like a gang member or hang out with other kids who want to become gang members. Denial by school officials allows gangs to promote themselves and recruit more members, thereby spreading the 'disease' throughout the school. Without the denial of the community, gang members could not commit crimes and get away with acts of violence." ... And there is much, much more in GANGSTA IN THE HOUSE!
GANGS: A Handbook For Community Awareness is another much-needed guidebook for those seeking solutions to gangs, violence, intimidation and crime on their school campuses, neighborhoods and communities. It offers a complete guide to the symbols, styles of dress, graffiti, and the rituals used by gangs. It will also help citizens, educators, law enforcement, security and significant others to identify them in your community, as well as addressing the problem as it arises, including a thorough overview of successful anti-gang programs from communities around the country. Written by a police officer, a counselor and a teacher, who have all successfully taken measures to halt the spread of gang-related violence, the manual combines testimonials, dramatizations and detailed information to help schools and communities to build foundations that support their youth and deter affiliations with gang members.
On Bullying:
Distressed by what she had seen happening to the children, a veteran educator, family life specialist and creator of the BEAT THE STREET interactive anti-bullying CD-ROM software program, nationally and internationally endorsed and distributed by the National Police and Security Officers Association of America (NPSOAA) has created a booklet to address Bullying, Harassment, Abuse and Intimidation occurring on elementary, middle and high school campuses across the nation. As violence continues to grow and fear becomes a part of our daily lives, the educator feels that changes have to be made while there's still time.
BEAT THE BULLY PROBLEM is a highly informative self-help booklet that provides proactive solutions to the growing problem of violence and negative behavior in young people. It's about Children Hurting Children and How Parents and educators can recognize the warning signs of a victim, and stop negative behavior patterns now, when children are young enough to change. It's about helping children to learn how NOT to become a victim!
